What makes one concrete pump operator better than the next?

Do some home work before selecting a concrete pumper for your next concreting project

What makes one concrete pump operator better than the next?

Here at concretebroker we have spent a large amount of time focussing on what to makes a good concreter, and on what to look for in a concrete batch plant. Perhaps its time to turn the heat up on concrete pumpers. Having spent the last week talking with concreter’s, builders and construction companies, we have come up with a few handy tips to look out for when choosing your pumpie.

The art of concrete pumping

Some people pick up the art of concrete pumping quickly. They have natural ability, are good under pressure, and can read the play, as it were. However no matter how adept you are at utilising machinery, at understanding the mechanics of a concrete pour, and on ensuring you keep up with the concreters on site, often experience is crucial when it comes to concrete pumping. Experienced operators have been through those difficult pours, where anything and everything can, and has happened. Blocked hoses, dry concrete, wet loads, difficult concreters, late loads, dags and contaminated concrete, equipment break downs and complex sites, they have seen it all. They know how and what to do when required. Wet loads are placed in certain locations within the slab to minimise long term damage, their equipment is well maintained, and in instances where blockages occur, they know where to locate them and how to unblock them. In short, they have been there before.

The attributes of a good concrete pumper

Operating an expensive piece of machinery such as a concrete pump is not easy. The site can often be inaccessible, tight, close to power lines, main roads and lots of people. Safety must come first. Concrete pumping courses and spending time with experienced pumping mentors are some of the ways new entrants to the field of concrete pumping can learn. Operating both boom and line pumps, together with different makes of concrete pumps, are useful skills too.

Some of the attibutes that make a good concrete pumper are as follows:

1. Forward thinking,
2. The ability to communicate effectively,
3. A knowledge of heights, levels and concrete in general,
4. Spacial awareness,
5. An ear for listening,
6. The capacity to make decisions on site,
7. A safety first mentality, and
8. A general understanding and appreciation of heavy machinery

How to choose your concrete pumper

How do you know whether the concrete pumper you are choosing is a peach, or in fact a lemon? Most concreters and individuals are not mind readers, and most have not studied psychology. So how can they tell who is good?

Given the cost of concrete pumping for your next concreting project may not be cheap, it is wise to do your homework. Ask around. Talk with concreters, building managers and even concrete plants in your area. Seek out reviews and references for their work if you can. Ask them for the names and numbers of some of their recent and existing customers. If they are professional they should be more than willing too assist. And once again, if you hire based solely on price, maybe you are making a mistake. Buy cheap buy twice may just be the outcome of your search for the cheapest price in town. Many things can go wrong with a concrete pour, and the concrete pumper is one of the most important cogs in the wheel. If they aren’t up to spec, your concrete pour may not be…..
