Polished Concrete Floors - All the. rage in 2017!

Concrete also has a lot of qualities that homeowners crave, and surprisingly, it offers a huge range of design options

Most people wouldn’t consider leaving bare concrete on display in their homes. Its cold, hard and uncomfortable surfaces do nothing to enhance the comfort of a home, and the dull, grey colour is generally unappealing. Not only that, but concrete is not an environmentally friendly material and if you change your mind, it’s not easy to remove.

That said, concrete also has a lot of qualities that homeowners crave, and surprisingly, it offers a huge range of design options.

Practical Benefits

Easy to Maintain. Concrete floors require very little care, a weekly mop with hot soapy water will keep them clean, and yearly sealing and polishing will maintain its finish.

Sustainable. If you’re renovating an existing concrete slab for flooring, you are limiting your consumption of new materials, so while it may not be an environmentally friendly material using existing materials is much more sustainable.

Low Cost. Concrete flooring can provide an elegant, stylish finish which is much more economical than traditional floor coverings. And it’s even more cost effective if you’re renovating an existing sub floor rather than laying a new one.

Resilience. There are few things in a domestic home that could damage a concrete floor. Pet claws, dropped plates, high heels and furniture legs are unlikely to leave any marks at all.

Longevity. Concrete is a successful construction material because of its durability and strength, so with a little maintenance, there’s every chance your concrete floor will last for decades.

Design Qualities

Despite it being cheap – much cheaper than luxurious carpeting or elegant wooden flooring – modern concrete mixes are extremely versatile and allow designers to create an endless array of textures, finishes and colours.

Colour. Any colour can be mixed straight into the concrete before it’s poured, but it can also be added later using an acid stain, dye or even waterproof latex paint.

Texture. The texture of bare concrete is often rough, but it can be made smooth during installation, or a decorative pattern can be impressed before the concrete sets.

Finish. Once in place, concrete can be polished or oiled to provide a high shine, or etched for a tiled effect.
