Concreter's face a race to the bottom on price in 2017
It would appear that many people do not understand that for concreter’s to operate a vehicle, tools, acquire knowledge, and be administratively efficient, it takes time and costs money. Organising concrete jobs and booking in the steel, accessories, concrete plant, form work, concrete pump and time with you, the client and customer, is a lengthy process. Added to which most customers want to deal with Pty Ltd companies who possess adequate work cover, insurances and licenses. Guess what? Those things cost money too?
Pouring fuel on this already raging fire and race to the bottom when it comes to pricing jobs, is the fact that good concreter’s are competing with backyard cowboys and project home builders, who want to pay 2 cents of not much per square metre. Not to mention clients who want everything for nothing. In other words a great job for half the price you are prepared to do it for.
So what is the solution? Well to be honest here at concrete broker we have a plethora of wonderful concreting experts listed in our community, but we do not have any answers to their problem. At least not in the current environment. Should the concrete industry be regulated more? Should concreter’s explain more clearly in their quotations what they are providing to you, the customer? Should the housing and trades associations exclude non compliant concreting contractors from their members books? Perhaps all of the above.

Yet concrete slabs shall still no doubt crack, remain unfinished, un-cured and incomplete, as concreter’s throughout the land are faced with the pressure of the almighty dollar. For many clients and customers are unaware of what it takes to lay and finish good concrete. So called concreter’s who have done a 10 week course to obtain a concrete certificate are still going to be let loose alongside experienced and professional concreter’s, quoting jobs at a fraction of the price. Let's face it, most of these young guns and weekend warrior concreter’s are just doing it for wages anyway. They don’t have the product, skills and expertise to deliver a sound finish, time in and time out. They just want their cash. If the client and customer whinges well who cares, they don’t need a reputation, they’re just fly by nighters anyway.
The bottom line is that if you want a sound concreting job at your place or project, expect to pay for it. Don’t always look for the lowest or cheapest price, for you may well end up with a cheap job. And when it comes to concrete, that’s not a good look.
Whilst if you are a project home builder perhaps you need to take a rain check on where you are at. Paying a few dollars extra per square metre may just mean you don’t chop and change concreting contractors every few months. It may mean your slabs aren’t always poured at 140 slump. It may mean less imperfections in your slab, better organisation on site and the chance to build sustainable long term relationships with your contractors and clients alike. We can only live in hope!
