Protect yourself against shoddy workmanship
Now more than ever there is a need to ensure the concrete works being performed at your place are being conducted to a standard that satisfies local building codes and specifications. For the past few weeks the Brisbane Times newspaper has been reporting on between 200 to 700 complaints made by residents in the Redlands and Gold Coast areas.
Complaints about retaining walls and concrete slabs in south-east Queensland have tripled since June, as pressure mounts on the state's building watchdog over the increasing occurrence of shoddy work. State opposition housing spokesman Stephen Bennett said complaints to the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland (BPEQ) had increased from 200 to 700 since June and has called for an urgent taskforce to investigate.
He said problems were "now rampant" in the Redlands and Gold Coast areas.
"It might be linked to the higher density on the (Gold) Coast, but clearly it is out of control on the Gold Coast.""The developers who do it well use steel uprights, use concrete infill, or use a mix of footings and Besser block fill to engineered standards," he said.
"The guys who are doing it illegally are using timber and they are building them way over height.
"And you have a deteriorating product in timber. Ultimately it will rot in some cases."
The Brisbane Times notes that in this house at Eatons Hill, with widening cracks almost half an inch wide in its outside brick walls, is further evidence of problems with the building watchdog, which has never investigated the serious flaw.

The BPEQ also confirmed it had received information about poor building standards about several shed companies operating in southeast Queensland.
"It's more than one shed company," the spokesman said.
"We've received some advice and we are still collecting information in this area."
